Europe|Passenger Jet Crashes in Kazakhstan With 67 Onboard

Russia’s state aviation authority said the plane had been attempting an emergency landing when it crashed near the city of Aktau. The Kazakh authorities said that at least 25 people survived.

A passenger jet with 62 passengers and five crew members onboard crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan on Wednesday the country’s authorities said, adding that at least 25 of them had survived.
Kazakhstan’s Emergency Situations Ministry said that the survivors, including two children, had been hospitalized with various injuries. A video from the scene, published by RIA Novosti, a Russian state news agency, showed injured passengers being pulled from the wreckage.
The plane had been trying to make an emergency landing in Aktau after hitting a flock of birds, Russia’s state aviation authority said in a statement cited by RIA Novosti. The airline said in a statement that its plane had come down about 1.8 miles away from the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan.
Operated by Azerbaijan’s Azal airlines, the Embraer-190 plane was traveling from Baku, the Azerbaijani capital on the Caspian Sea, to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya republic in the North Caucasus. RIA Novosti reported that the plane had been rerouted to Kazakhstan because of fog in Grozny.
Kazakhstan’s transportation ministry said that among the flight’s passengers, there were 37 Azerbaijani nationals, 16 Russians, six Kazakh citizens and three Kyrgyz nationals.
Kazakhstan’s emergency situations ministry said it had opened an investigation into the crash.
