As the sun rose on Sunday, runners from all over New York City, the greater metropolitan area and the world hopped on the Staten Island Ferry to make their way to the start of the 54th New York City Marathon on Sunday.
A few hours later, across the city, a slow trickle of spectators began to line the streets. They were assembled to cheer on friends and family, to hand out water and snacks, to provide moral support in the moments when energy starts to flag. They carried handmade signs, waved flags, rang cowbells and doled out high-fives.
Many of the runners responded in kind — smiling, waving and even breaking into dance as they passed well-wishers on the sidelines. It was a bright day, slightly warmer than last year, but that didn’t stop some competitors from wearing multicolored wigs, elaborate hair ribbons and even head-to-toe costumes.
