Two Pennsylvania state troopers were shot while responding to a call along a rural highway in the northeastern part of the state around noon on Thursday, the authorities said.

Gov. Josh Shapiro confirmed the shooting, which occurred along State Route 171 in Susquehanna County, before delivering planned remarks in Bucks County, more than 100 miles from the site of the shooting.

“I want you to know I have communicated with Colonel Paris, he is on the scene,” Mr. Shapiro said, referring to Christopher Paris, who leads the Pennsylvania State Police. “It is an active situation.”

Mr. Shapiro said in a post on social media that he and his wife, Lori, were en route to the scene on Thursday afternoon.

Both troopers were taken to hospitals, according to a statement from the Pennsylvania State Police, which did not elaborate on their conditions.

In a post on social media, U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan Jr., Republican of Pennsylvania, said he was “relieved to hear” that the troopers were in stable condition.

The authorities urged drivers to avoid the area, which is several miles from Thompson Township, a small town with a population under 500.
