The New York Jets defensive player Kris Boyd was critically wounded in an early morning shooting in Midtown Manhattan on Sunday, according to the police.
Officers responded just after 2 a.m. to West 38th Street near Seventh Avenue, where a 29-year-old man was found shot in the abdomen, according to a police spokesman.
The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition, the spokesman said.
The police did not name the victim, but a law enforcement official with knowledge of the matter identified the man as Mr. Boyd.
Meghan Gilmore, a spokeswoman for the New York Jets, said in a statement on Sunday, “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.”
No arrests have been made in the shooting, the police said. The episode stemmed from a dispute involving a small group of people.
The address outside where the shooting happened is listed as Sei Less, an Asian fusion restaurant near Madison Square Garden that is popular with athletes and musicians, according to a 2024 New York Times dining story about celebrities. The restaurant did not immediately respond to inquiries on Sunday.
Mr. Boyd is in his first year as a defensive back with the Jets after signing with the team in March.
He previously played with the Houston Texans for two years and appeared in all 17 games for that team last season, according to the Jets.
He also played for the Arizona Cardinals for one season.
Mr. Boyd was originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round out of Texas in 2019, according to his profile on the Jets website.
The Jets placed him on injured reserve after he sustained a shoulder injury during the team’s practice on Aug. 2.
The team’s last game was on Thursday, when it lost to the New England Patriots 27-14 at Gillette Stadium outside Boston.
