A gas explosion at a nursing home northeast of Philadelphia drew a large emergency response to Bristol, Pa., on Tuesday, and officials said there were reports that people were trapped inside the building.
The explosion at the Bristol Health and Rehab Center, also known as Silver Lake Nursing Home, prompted a “mass incident response,” according to the Upper Makefield Township Police Department. Ambulances and firefighters were called to the nursing home around 2:15 p.m., according to Bucks County, Pa., 911 logs.
The gas explosion resulted in a “major fire,” a partial collapse of the building and “multiple casualties,” Steve Santarsiero, a state senator whose district includes Bristol, said on social media.
“We understand that there are people trapped inside,” Ruth Miller, a Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman, told The Associated Press.
Governor Josh Shapiro said in a social media post that he had been briefed on the explosion, and that the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the Pennsylvania State Police were offering resources.
Writing on social media, Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, Republican of Pennsylvania, asked for prayers for the nursing home’s residents and staff members, as well as “our brave first responders who rushed to the scene and ran toward danger without hesitation.”
A message posted on the Bristol Health and Rehab Center’s website said that emergency responders had responded to the nursing home for “an incident.” Saber Healthcare Group, which is based in Beechwood, Ohio, owns and operates the nursing home. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
