A shooting at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Grand Blanc Township, Mich., on Sunday morning left “multiple” people injured, the police said, adding that the church was on fire as the authorities responded.
The police in Grand Blanc Township, about seven miles southeast of Flint, said on social media that the shooter was “down” and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
“The entire church is on fire,” Christopher Swanson, the Genesee County sheriff, said in a video that his department shared on social media. People who were at the church have been evacuated, he said, describing the scene as “dynamic.”
“There’s a lot of things that are happening that we aren’t able to communicate just because of the work that needs to be done,” he added, saying that federal and state officials were coordinating with the local authorities.
The scene is no longer a threat, Sheriff Swanson said.
The nature and extent of the injuries at the church, which has a 10 a.m. Sunday service, were not immediately clear.
Videos circulating on social media showed smoke billowing above the tree line near the site of the church.
