Protesters in Nepal set fire to houses belonging to the country’s president, its prime minister and a former prime minister on Tuesday, a day after at least 19 people were killed in clashes as the authorities opened fire on crowds of young marchers.

Early on Tuesday, the government retreated from its ban on major social media platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram, a prohibition that had lit a fuse on years of anger and frustration over official corruption and social inequity. Trying to head off another day of protests, officials also declared a curfew.

But a new wave of protests quickly engulfed the capital anyway.

This is a developing story.
